Our Story
Born in a Sister's Promise
Born on a promise between two sisters - Nancy Brinker to her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36 began our - our vow to end breast cancer forever has become a promise for millions.
Since launching the breast cancer movement 26 years ago, we've transformed the culture - how the world talks about and treats this devastating disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the only grassroots organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage, from the causes to the cure and the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.
The Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
One of 125 affiliates across the county and overseas; the Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is comprised of survivors, and activists who raise funds to advance our promise to help women over the cultural, social and economic barriers to breast health and treatment. Through programs like the Komen Race for the Cure series, the WNY Affiliate has raised over 2 million dollars. 75% of this money is awarded in outreach programs to improve access to breast health care, outreach and education and support for breast cancer survivors. Komen WNY identifies specific unmet needs with the WNY communities and "fills in the gaps" for unmet needs. The remaining 25% goes to breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Research Grant Awards.
To truly end eradicate breast cancer, we must not only invest in research for the cures for future generations, but also help meet the immediate breast health needs of women and families today.
